By 2000 B.C. , most of the advanced civilizations had already formulated their own calendars, laws of cosmic motion over this ever changing Earth and their attributed influence over mundane affairs. The cosmic laws were perceived as the only everlasting, unfailing and dependable rules. It is the nature of the human being that he always wants to be sure about his intrinsically uncertain fortune and future, therefore fortune-telling always thrived in every civilization, and what could be a better guarantor of certainty than the ‘never changing’ rules of motions of celestial bodies? Any aberration of cosmic laws used to cause intellectual shock and universal anxiety till some apparently rational explanation was not forwarded by somebody and brought in relief. This solar eclipse created mind numbing terror in the hearts of Vedic Aryans, till sage Atri explained it to be a natural phenomenon (Rig Veda. V. 40, Sukta 5 to 9).

As the rules of celestial motion became better understood and comprehensively formulated, the uncertain fortune on the earth got hitched to the certainly of the firmament and this synchronization of the heavenly and mundane happenings generated the ‘science’ of Astrology.

The present work is on an infinitesimally small but potentially vital part of the Herculean venture in correlating worldly affairs with the celestial movements. History of Indian astrology is given briefly. Astrology was originated in India. Rishies and Munis experienced the universe in their body by yoga (Yat Pinde tatt brahamada). A word circle (chakra) has been given in Rigveda which has been used for zodiac. It is estimated by the Rigveda etc., that Indians possessed the knowledge of Astrology and Astronomy from 28,000 years at least. (1)Indian Astronomy Surya Siddhanta: Surya Siddhanta is one of the oldest class of revelations. Shlokas (verses) 2 to 9 of Surya Siddhanta reveal that Asur Maya practiced penance of sun god in the end of Satyuga. On being contented this man who is my part will teach you. The teaching of that sun part man is Surya Siddhanta. Some changes have occurred with the passage of time. The knowledge of longitude of Planets, Eclipses, Healical rising and setting, nodes etc., is available in it.

(2) Pitamaha—Siddhanta: Brahamagupta and Bhaskaracharaya have adopted Pitamah-siddhanta as the base of their calculations. It includes the calculations about the motions of the sun and moon only.

(3) Vashishtha - Siddhantha: It is the improved version of Pitamah Siddantha and includes the motion of moon and sun only.

(4) Romaka-Siddantha: Some learned persons tell on the basis of Lata, Vashitha, Vijayanadi, and Aryabhatta that it was written by Shrisena.

(5) Jyotishkarandaka: It is an original book and appears to have been written in 300-400B.C. It has given information about Ashwini and Swati Nakshatras.

(6) Surya-Pragyapati: It is an original Jain book as old as Vedanga-Jyotish. It is written in Prakrata language. Malyagiri Suri wrote its commentary in Sanskrit. Motion of the sun, its revolution, days, months and fortnight etc., has been narrated in it. Solar system and their orbital circles have been described in it.

(7) Chanda Pragaypati: It is also a Jain treaties and written in Prakrata language. The motions of the Sun and the Moon have been fixed in it. The method of calculating the duration of day by the length of shadow has been given in it.

No, I'm not pulling your paw. "Doghoroscopes" is a real web site that provides weekly, monthly and birthday readings exclusively for pooches. The site has developed a large following, drawing millions of virtual visitors from all over the world.

The horoscopes are produced by a woman in Connecticut. While she emphasizes that the readings are meant for entertainment and fun, rather than for making any life decisions regarding pets, many visitors seem to take the site very seriously.

For instance, people flock to the site's owner-dog compatibility guide to "predict" if a new dog is likely to get along with its owner. That's an interesting idea - if only there was a comparable site for humans that could accurately weed out potentially incompatible spouses.

The woman who created the web site actually keeps a low profile, preferring her more visible canine partner, 'Newf,' to take the spotlight. Newf is a beagle/dachshund mix who has become the web site's mascot. His cheerful image appears throughout the site, as he watches visitors on their virtual trip through the Doghoroscopes' zodiac links.

But Newf is no ordinary dog star; he was also the inspiration for creating the site.

From the very first day the woman brought Newf home, she noticed that they both had astrological similarities in temperament, likes and dislikes, and moods. They also shared the same birth month and day.

Both are also homebodies, fiercely protective of their home, and have lots of nervous energy. What's more, they hate thunder, lightning, and water. While Newf's owner admits that when it comes to bathing, she only goes somewhat reluctantly, the pup is far more stubborn and has to be dragged from his hiding spot under the bed.

It would seem, too, that the Moon influences their intertwined lives. This is not to say that they both head for the backyard when the Moon is full and howl in unison towards the heavens. But Newf does tend to whimper during a full Moon, while his owner admits she can become weepy.

But Newf's owner will reveal the origin of his unusual name. Since Newf is just a little guy, he was given a big dog name so he would always think big. Along these lines, he was called Newf as an abbreviation for the Newfoundland dog breed which, according to Wikipedia, are known for their "giant size, tremendous strength, calm dispositions, and loyalty."
